Syllabus

Description

Kvarta English Literature course continues to focus on the elements of literature through analysis of written and visual texts. Classic and contemporary novels, short stories, poetry, plays and film form the basis of study. In preparation for kvinta, the students are expected to  develop their formal essay writing skills and to begin to think critically about a range of texts. They will respond to literature through discussion, writing and through dramatic interpretations (which includes performance). The students will engage in collaborative and individual activities that allow them to experience new perspectives and to share their own.

 

General Classroom Rules and Expectations

  • Be kind and respectful towards everyone!
  • Food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom. Only water is ok!

  • Pen and pencil, eraser and whiteout
  • LIT notebook and a smile 🙂
  • LIT reading journal
  • LIT binder and paper
  • Portfolio folder (to be kept in class)
  • Sticky notes

Texts Include

Cupid & Psyche, Apuleius (myth/short story)

Decameron, Boccaccio (short stories: selection)

Sonnets, Dante, Petrarch, Shakespeare (poetry: selection)

The Knife of Never Letting Go, Ness (novel)

Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury (novel)

The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger (novel)

Antigone, Sophocles (play)

Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare (play)

*Please note that this list is subject to change due to the dynamic nature of the course. You will also be expected to study additional texts independently.

Additional Information & Resources

Grading Policy

The final grade for this course is based on seven main summative assessment components:

10% = Presentations (oral analysis for critical and/or creative understanding of literature), throughout the year.

15% = Weekly Writing Journal Entries (250-400+ words), in class and for homework.

15% = Reading Journal Entries (min. 6 entries of 400-600+ words about 3 texts per semester), outside of class.

15% = Creative Writing (2 pieces, 750-1000+ words each), one per semester.

15% = Performance (requires memorization, interpretation & creativity), for an audience, one per semester.

15% = Two formal essays (750-1000+ words), one each semester, topic chosen from a list.

15% = Two in-class essay exams (midterm and final), one each semester, written in class (60min).

 

The students are awarded a grade from 1 to 10 on SkolaOnline for their work in accordance with the PORG grading scale and a combination of the following assessment criteria:

Criterion A: Analysing

Criterion B: Organizing

Criterion C: Producing text

Criterion D: Using language
